Social & Emotional Regulation OT for Children 💛

Every child experiences big emotions — but some children find it particularly hard to manage their feelings, read social cues, or connect with peers. When this affects friendships, school and family life, paediatric OT can make a real difference.

What is emotional regulation in children?

Emotional regulation is the ability to manage and respond to emotional experiences in a flexible, socially appropriate way — recognising and naming feelings, tolerating frustration, recovering from upsets, and adjusting behaviour to fit the situation. These skills develop gradually through childhood and are strongly influenced by underlying neurological development.

Children who struggle with emotional regulation are not being naughty or manipulative — their nervous system simply needs more support. Occupational therapists are trained to identify the sensory, neurological and developmental factors underlying these difficulties and build practical, lasting skills.

📌 Signs your child may benefit from emotional regulation OT

  • Frequent, intense meltdowns that are hard to recover from
  • Difficulty reading social cues or understanding others’ feelings
  • Struggles to make or keep friendships
  • Anxiety in new situations or around unfamiliar people
  • Difficulty with losing, turn-taking or unexpected changes
  • Impulsive behaviour or difficulty waiting
  • Rigid thinking or intense distress when routines change

How we help 🌱

We use evidence-based frameworks including the Zones of Regulation and the Alert Program to help children understand their emotional states and develop a personalised toolkit of self-regulation strategies. Sessions are engaging and hands-on — children learn through play, role-play and creative activities, not worksheets.

We also address the sensory underpinnings of regulation difficulties, since a child who struggles to regulate emotionally is often also experiencing sensory processing challenges. By addressing both together, we see significantly better outcomes.

Parents receive practical strategies to use at home, and we collaborate with schools and other providers where appropriate to ensure strategies are consistent across environments.

Social & emotional regulation — your questions answered 💬

Is OT or psychology better for emotional regulation?
Both can be effective, and they often complement each other. OT tends to focus on the sensory and neurological factors underlying emotional regulation and practical skill-building for daily life. Psychology addresses the cognitive and emotional patterns. For many children, both can be beneficial — we’re happy to work alongside psychologists as part of a broader support team.
Does my child need an autism or ADHD diagnosis to get help?
Not at all. Emotional regulation difficulties are common in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, anxiety and sensory processing differences — but also in children with no diagnosis. We work with your child’s individual profile, not their diagnostic label (or lack of one).
How can I support my child’s emotional regulation at home?
This is a key part of what we do — we coach parents alongside children. Home strategies might include predictable routines, co-regulation techniques, sensory tools, visual supports and communication strategies. We share practical strategies every session so you always leave with something to try.
