What is self-care OT?

Self-care and daily living skills cover all the routines and tasks that allow children to function independently — dressing, grooming, eating, toileting and managing their own belongings. These skills rely on a range of underlying abilities including fine motor skills, sensory processing, sequencing, body awareness and emotional regulation.

When one or more of these foundations needs extra support, daily tasks become a battle. Paediatric OT addresses the root cause and builds the skills children need to become more independent — step by step.

📌 Signs your child may benefit from self-care OT

  • Significant difficulty dressing or undressing for their age
  • Struggles with toileting routines or toilet training
  • Needs a lot of help at mealtimes (utensils, sitting, eating variety)
  • Difficulty with grooming tasks like teeth brushing or hair washing
  • Can’t follow multi-step routines without constant reminders
  • Distress around hygiene or self-care tasks
  • Very limited food range linked to texture or sensory sensitivity

How we help 🌱

We use a task analysis approach — breaking each self-care skill into its individual steps and identifying exactly where the challenge lies for your child. Therapy is then tailored to build those specific components, using strategies like backward chaining, visual schedules, adaptive equipment and environmental modifications.

Parents are an essential part of the process. We work closely with families to develop practical home strategies and consistent routines that build independence over time. Our goal: fewer battles and more confident, capable kids.

Self-care & daily living — your questions answered 💬

My child is 6 and still can’t dress themselves — is that normal?
Most children develop independence in dressing between ages 4–6, though there’s natural variation. If your child is consistently struggling with dressing tasks that peers manage easily, or if it’s causing significant daily distress, an OT assessment can help clarify whether there’s an underlying reason and what support would help.
Can OT help with fussy or picky eating?
Yes, when picky eating is linked to sensory sensitivities (textures, temperatures, smells) or oral motor difficulties, OT can be very effective. We take a gradual, pressure-free approach to food exploration. For more complex feeding difficulties, we may recommend a multidisciplinary approach including a speech pathologist or dietitian.
What’s the best age to start self-care OT?
Early intervention is always valuable — the earlier we address challenges, the faster progress tends to be. That said, OT is beneficial at any age within our 0–12 range. If you have concerns, reach out now rather than waiting.
